AP Exam Format

The 2018 AP GoPo Exam is at 8:00 am on Thursday, May 10, 2018.

*(If you teach GoPo in the spring semester and school doesn't end until June 14, the exam is still on May 4; if it snows all January and you miss a ton of school, the exam is still May 4; if you have prom on Wednesday, May 3 (Midnight Masquerade), the exam is still on May 4. If you teach GoPo year long and graduate on May 2, cry me a river! You get the drift.)

The GoPo exam consists of two parts.

I. Multiple Choice    60 questions. 45 minutes. 45 seconds/question. 50% of exam grade.

II. Free Response    4 mandatory Questions.  1 hour, 40 minutes. 25 minutes/question. 50% of exam grade.

The AP GoPo exam covers six different units of study.

I. Constitutional Underpinnings 5-15% of test

II. Political Beliefs and Behaviors 10-20% of test

III. Parties, Interest Groups, + Mass Media 10-20% of test

IV. Institutions of National Government 35-45% of test

V. Public Policy 5-15% of test

VI. Civil Rights and Civil Liberties 5-15% of test

*(There is no state/local unit, there is no unit on international politics, there is no unit on Midnight Masquerade.)

Top Ten Review Ideas

  1. Take old US free response exams and go over the answers. Here is my review of every FRQ since 2001. Predict what this year's FRQs will be!

  2. Make flash cards of the most important politics terms. Here is a link to some tasty on-line GoPo flashcards.

  3. Make a list/chart/graphic organizer of all the specific constitutional powers of the branches of government.

  4. Put your heads together. Work in review teams and groups. Do not work together on the actual exam!

  5. Plan ahead and begin our Magical 8 Day Test Review and Workout Program!

  7. Practice good test taking skills: Come to the test rested and relaxed, take your time on the test, answer all questions on the multiple choice section, build a rubric for your FRQs and write specific and factual answers.

  9. Make a list of the top ten Supreme Court cases you should know for the test and then compare your list to my list of the Top Ten Supreme Court Cases.

  10. Make a list of the top ten Constitutional Amendments and US Public Policy Acts and then compare your list to my list of the Top Ten Amendments and Public Policy
